Wife defies judge's order, returns to holed-up husband

Federal marshals will not risk an armed confrontation at the home of Plainfield tax evaders Ed and Elaine Brown, despite a new warrant for Elaine Brown's arrest, U.S. Marshal Steve Monier said yesterday.

"We're just not going to go there and create an armed standoff," Monier said yesterday. "We're not playing that game."

A federal judge signed a petition yesterday to arrest Elaine Brown, who has been under court order to stay away from her husband and their luxurious hilltop home in Plainfield. Elaine Brown violated probation by returning to the house Tuesday afternoon.
