Warrant issued for tax protester

Elaine Brown broke bail to join husband

A federal judge has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of Elaine Brown, the Plainfield woman who defied her bail conditions to return to her husband, Ed, at their fortified hilltop home Tuesday night.

The tax-protesting couple had been separated since Jan. 12, when Elaine decided to return to their criminal trial in federal court and Ed opted to stay home. They were convicted on a combined 20 felonies related to their unwillingness to pay federal taxes and attempts to hide large financial transactions. The Browns say they are under no legal obligation to pay the taxes.
